CASINO GAMES

This splendid game is sometimes spelled Casino, possibly in celebration of the Italian city of that name, or possibly because some early authors did not know how to spell Casino. The modern consensus (for whatever it may be worth) is that the game does hail from Italy but is properly spelled with only one s because it is a gambling pastime. Among games in which players strive to capture specific point-scoring cards, Casino is unsurpassed as a test of card memory and card sense. Although it often is among the first adult card games taught to children−and therefore is widely known as a child’s game−this should mislead nobody. For example, it is foolish to play a fourth game of Casino for cash stakes with anyone who has already won the first three. Some people are just too good at this kind of recreation and do not hesitate to exploit the advantage.

PLAYERS AND DECK

For two, using the regular 52-card deck. In play of hand, ace Counts as 1 and other numbered cards rank at face value.

CUT, SHUFFLE AND DEAL

Dealer is designated by draw for high card. Dealer shuffles op nent cuts. Dealer serves two cards to opponent, two cards face center, two cards to himself and then repeats the procedure, 1eavj four face up in center and four in each hand. After each hand played, dealer serves new four-card hands, but adds no new cards to center of table.

THE PLAY

Beginning with dealer’s opponent, each plays in turn, taking one of the following alternatives. Trailing: Player puts one of his cards face up on the table, along with the other exposed cards, and the turn passes to his opponent.

Taking: Player may take (or take-in) any exposed face or number card by displaying a hand card of the identical denomination. Or he may add the face values of two or more of the exposed number cards and take them with a hand card whose denomination equals the sum of their face values. It sometimes is possible to accomplish both these kinds of take in one turn, using a card from the hand to take not only an arithmetical combination of exposed cards in free online poker rooms but another exposed card of the same rank as the taking card. If a player takes every exposed card on the board in one turn, it is a sweep and, in some versions, entitles the player to extra credit in the scoring. Taken cards are stacked face down in front of the player. Building: The player places a card from his hand on one or more of the exposed cards, so that the sum of the combined face values equals the face value of another, higher card held in his hand. In doing this, he declares his intentions: "Building eights" (if that what he is building), and may supplement the build with any eight that ha pens to be exposed in the center of the table, or the a Y additional combination of exposed cards whose sum equals eight his next turn, he may display the eight from his hand and take if build. Or he may expand the build with a new card.
